Arcane Bunny Society Review

I made my first purchase from Arcane Bunny Society when she held her pre-order sale the second to last weekend of April. She was very transparent, quoting about a 7 week turn around time, as these were all pre-orders. I ordered on April 23rd and it shipped May 25th, which is roughly 6 weeks. I ended up with:

  • Back to Dream Castle in Body Butter ($16 for 3.75 oz)  and Perfume Roller ($9 for 8ish ml/0.30 oz)
  • You Opened It Bar Soap ($7 for 1 bar) and Perfume Roller ($9)

Back to Dream Castle

Back to Dream Castle, Back to Dream Castle
Color your world with pink and blue
Back to Dream Castle, Back to Dream Castle
Cotton candy envelops all you do!
After your shower; before your bedtime
It matters not what you do
Back to Dream Castle, Back to Dream Castle
Lovely skin waits for you!

This is her cotton candy scent. On initial application (from the perfume roller), I get this artificial sweetness, similar to those Bath & Body Products from the late 90s/early 2000s. A bit juvenile at first, but once it dries, it’s a super light, airy sugary cotton candy. There’s still wisps of the artificial sweetness but it’s not offensive in anyway, and is a bit nostalgic for me, being a 90s baby. I fell in love with this scent and wore it 3-4 days straight after getting it! The perfume roller is a great value-$9 for a bit over 8 ml. The throw is pretty low and does require reapplication throughout the day. I’m not complaining as it’s packaged as a roller ball which makes it easy.

The body butter, oh man, it is pricey, at about $4 per ounce. I slightly regret buying it after seeing really how small 3.75 oz is, but after trying it out, it’s VERY moisturizing and extremely thick. It absorbs easily yet keeps its moisture even after washing my hands. This is great medium between body butter and a lotion. The aesthetic of the glass jar to the beautiful swirls of pink and blue definitely have value as well. I think I would rebuy this, perhaps just once a year as a treat to myself. It’d make an awesome gift and is so presentable.

You Opened It

So you like to travel to exotic dimensions? Explore the further regions of experience with a base of sandalwood, patchouli, and tonka bean; highlights of mandarin, agave nectar, and African lotus and grounded with cardamom, nutmeg, and black peppercorn. Our most popular scent!

I initially only purchased this as a bar soap, as it has a lot of notes I was uncertain about. I changed my mind and opted for a perfume roller of this as well! This is a warm, spiced scent, I think perfect for cold and fall weather. I get the warm, sandalwood with the spice of the cardamom. The throw is stronger than BTDC, but still not that strong in comparison to some of my other blends. It lasts about 3-4 hours before completely disappearing. I haven’t had a chance to test out the bar soap, but the bar soap smells very heavily scented and is a thick green/brown color.

Overall: I am super happy with my purchase, if you follow ABS on FaceBook, you can follow her progress as she is extremely great at posting update photos and just really keeping her customers in the loop. Although the 7 weeks felt like f o r e v e r, as a customer, I couldn’t complain when I saw her working daily on getting the stuff made. She has the PRETTIEST aesthetic out there, from the labels, to the presentation, you really can’t beat it. I think I found a new love….!

Day #7 – Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller

Phew, it’s been a while since I did one of these! Today is Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller, from their Carnaval Diabolique line. This is from the original run of it from 2006 (they recently revamped and brought it back in 2015).

misfortuneteller.jpg

A colorless woman bursts from an elaborate gold and ruby tent and faints dead at your feet. Soft laughter emits from the dark entrance to the tent, and the scent of musk, black fruits and incense touches your senses. Looking up, you see that the sign hovering above the unconscious woman is adorned with images of the Major Arcana’s Tower and reads:

“Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller.
No fate too grim, no future too bleak.”

A tiny woman with floor-length black dreadlocks walks out of the tent, stepping over the prone body. She is clothed in deep red wrappings, and is bedecked in golden ornaments bearing alchemical symbols and charms representing eternity, chance, and wisdom. She pauses, looks you over slowly, and then flicks a tarot card at your feet.

Red musk, vanilla bean, pomegranate, patchouli leaf and wild plum.

In the Bottle: Smells a bit like cheap sharp cologne with a sharp hit of patchouli in the background.

Wet on the Skin: Rooty, leafy patchouli with some musky juicy red fruit. Slight “coolness” to it, similar to menthol. I’m not getting any sweetness from the vanilla at all. This is a dark orange, amber oil.

Dry on the Skin: The red musk comes to the forefront along with soft vanilla, and that initial coolness/mintyness fades away. I get some of the “dirty” patchouli vibe, but not in the hemp family as much as leafy and slightly herbal. If I were to describe this in colors it would be extremely dark maroon with swirls of deep red, purple and black. An hour later, this is a gorgeous warm vanilla-y musk with patchouli. I definitely get the red musk note that Smut has, but super balanced with the vanilla and patchouli. I don’t get much of the wild plum, but I’m guessing that it’s lending it’s sweetness to the vanilla bean.  Super pretty, and so fitting of this misfortune teller. Whenever buying older bottles, I find that the throw and longevity is significantly decreased (although still smellinimage1 (1).JPGg quite good), this is still quite strong for a 2006 blend.

I am so glad I decided to get this, I also have a Mme. Moriarty Misfortune Teller from the 2015 run of it coming in my next order and will do a side by side comparison!

Day #5 – Fatherhood: A Moment in Time

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab is the first Indie perfumeries I tried and is still my favorite. Their scents are so well mixed and unique, there really isn’t quite anything like it. In addition to the quality of their goods, their fanbase is out of this world. Between the online forum and the various groups on social media, it’s really amazing!

The owners/founders have a daughter named Lilith. On both the BPAL and BPTP side, they release scents based on her or experiences with her. Today’s is from the BPTP side, run by Puddin’, her dad. This collection is within the Fatherhood collection: A Moment in TimeEach Lilith comes with either the story or description, they almost all tug at my heart. This one in particular is so touching.

FatherhoodQuiet moments with Lilith mean so much to me.

Nothing compares to the joy of watching her as she experiences things for the first time, and I’m grateful to be part of it.

A tranquil scent, illuminated by joy and warm with the serenity of love: bourbon vanilla and soft sandalwood with tiare, white fig, sweet benzoin, guiac wood, French lavender, and a touch of warm patchouli.

In the bottle: All I smell is lavender, oh noes, and not the sweet, sugared lavender that I’m accustomed to, but a strong herbal lavender, this much be the “French” part of the French lavender note.

Wet on the Skin: I still get the lavender but now I’m getting a bit of patchouli as well. At this stage it’s still a super strongly lavender with patchouli blend and not quite what I was expecting. I really hope this lavender mellows out a bit because it’s still way too herbal for me.  get the heavy handed lavender but on the skin it blossoms into a gorgeous figgy patchouli lavender blend. I think I need a back-up.

Dry on the Skin: After it dries out, the fig completely comes to forefront. I get a really sweet fig that’s mellowing out the lavender, with patchouli in the background grounding the whole scent. This is a gorgeously sweet lavender blend. The sillage is pretty strong but it creates more of a cloud of scent around me. I applied at about 7 am and it last for a good 5 hours without reapplication. I’m super happy I sprung for this one, it has a few notes that I’m unfamiliar with (fig, tiare, benzoin) but it really turned out to be a win.

Day #2 – NAVA Protoceratops & Moonstone

I found NAVA after they’d already gone on their haitus, hopefully returning late Spring! I can’t wait, as their blends are out of this world. I am constantly surprised and blown away by how well blended and different they are. After I heard NAVA has a DINOSAUR line, I was determined to find one to try. Many of the reviews describe it as “rocky”.

dinosaur

I picked up Protoceratops, resinous Amber Accord, Limestone Amber, Crystalline, Kobalt, Crystal Absolute, Vanilla Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream Accord, Vanilla Caramel, Bastet Amber and Egyptian Sugar accord.

In the Bottle: I get a strong sharp smell of resin, very similar to the resin I would use with playing violin. It’s a strong amber resin smell and I don’t really smell much of the sugar and vanilla. I’m a little nervous at this point, as it doesn’t smell great in the bottle.

Color: Yellow

Wet on Skin: Very powdery and a bit bitter (similar to the bitterness from vetiver) but more resin-y than green. I am getting some of the vanilla and cream for a creamy amber-y resin scent.

Dry Down: The bitterness has finally dried away and I have the most lovely vanilla! It has a dry quality to it and it’s a smooth, creamy, amber vanilla resin.

I get a resin-y sugared vanilla ice cream withIMG_4066 depth from the limestone and resin. Visually I see a sugar cube made of  vanilla sugar, limestone and resin. This is really magical and am amazedby how well it works together. For some extra vanilla oomph, I layered NAVA’s Moonstone (the true Husk, black and white Fleck, essence and whole of African White Vanilla with a kiss of Crystalline). This combo is magical and I’ll definitely be returning to it. It lends a slight musk to the scent and helps amplify the vanilla.

Perfume Challenge – 1 Review a Day

I am fairly new to the Indie perfume scene, only really starting in October of 2016. Since then, I feel like I’ve been rushing to find the rares, hoarding my current loves and not really giving all of them a fair chance. With accumulating so many new ones so quickly, I find that there are SOO many that are not being loved!

I’m going to try something new and writing a review everyday-either for perfume, or hair gloss, or whatnot. Could be full sized, sample, whatever.

Day # 1 – March 29, 2017

Today I am wearing Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s, Womb Furie, from Lupercalia 2016. The scent description is: An itch that needs to be scratched: Snake Oil (A blend of exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla) and three types of honey.  As Snake Oil is so loved and has such a big fan following, I tried my best to make Snake Oil work for me, but it was way too incense heavy, with barely any vanilla/sugar. As my boyfriend commented that I smelled like a head shop, it went into the de-stash pile.  When I found this Snake Oil blend, I was too excited as Snake Oil almost worked for me, and I am HUGE sucker for the lab’s honey note. This is a recurring blend that is released annually during BPAL’s Lupercalia (Valentine’s) release.

In the Bottle: Super sweet snake oil, I get the smell of incense, sugar, dark vanilla.

Color: Dark Yellow (just like honey!)

Wet on the Skin: I get the initial incense spice that is so Snake Oil, but the honey is equal in partners with the Snake Oil and I get a strong, powerful honey note in there as well. This is very balanced to my nose between the spiced incense and the sweetness of the honey.

Dry Down: The incense mostly fades away and I’m left with a spicy honey.

Verdict: I love this, this is everything I wanted in Snake Oil and even more.  If you’re a fan of honey and dark sweet incense, this is for you. Visually I imagine burning Indonesian incense with dark honey dribbled on top of it. This is a great date night scent and would go great with any other dark scents.

Adventure into Arcana

One of the huge names in Indie perfume is ARCANA! I’ve heard great things about it, especially the quality of the oils and the depth of the smells. When I saw on r/imam that her shop was up and running on eBay, I snagged myself three bottles-Love, Snug and Unearthly Lovely (I got Two Fingers Ballet from a swap)!

I ordered it on January 31st, and it shipped on February 4th and arrived two days after that! In the indie world, that’s as fast of a turn around time as I can really expect!

  • Love: Splendid, dazzling devotion. A breathtaking vanilla accord is accompanied by fresh cream, sugarcane, soft musk, and a pinch of tea leaves. Out of the bottle, this smells SOUR to me, so so sour. Almost like curdled yogurt/milk, or super tart lemon yogurt. Either way, we’re not off to a great start. I let it rest for about a week and give it another go. I decide to just apply to my skin instead of doing a bottle sniff. On the skin, it’s still quite sour, it’s died down a bit but still prominent. Two hours later, the sour is actually almost completely gone! I’m left with this soft, sugary musk. It’s so awesome at this stage!! I’m not sure if I can make it through the first phase to get to this point. Super sad that the cream note doesn’t work with my skin. I can’t speak to the throw, as I ended up scrubbing this one off.
  • Snug: The scent of staying in to watch the snow fall: dark honey amber, marshmallow, and the glow of beeswax candles. Out of the bottle, it’s strongly beeswax!! It veers between plasticky and ambery. On the skin, I definitely get that honey amber now. About an hour in, the plasticky wax melts (ha ha) away and I have a light mallow, amber honey scent. This to me is very unisex, and is an ideal sleeping scent. I’m actually wrapped in a fuzzy robe, and this scent fits in perfectly. Throw is fairly high on this one, I went to sleep with it and had whiffs of it on my clothing in the morning.
  • Unearthly Lovely: Dusty honey, bee pollen, and vanilla bean. Vanilla, I can  definitely smell the vanilla, and right behind it a strong honey scent, almost like hay and honey put together. I wouldn’t describe it as green, but definitely is not just straight golden honey either. Almost a darker honey if that makes sense. On the skin, vanilla is still the first note, then the bee pollen then the honey. This is a winner for me, I find it extremely similar to Snug, but a bit more feminine with the prominence of the vanilla bean. If I had to chose between the two, I’d go with Unearthly Lovely, but they’re both great! Throw is on par with snug.
  • Two Fingers BalletA delicate blend of French vanilla creme, white amber, sugared vanilla beans, caramel, and the smallest dab of opium. OMG OUT OF THE BOTTLE, IT SMELLS LIKE ALMONDS, where am I getting the almonds?! It’s not even in the notes-it must be the white amber, or caramel? On the skin, it smells like Taiwanese almond milk tea. I can’t get enough of it. THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR.  This smell is delicious, it’s foody without being overwhelming and just so absolutely beautiful. I love this so much and may have gotten two back ups. I get vanilla bean, and caramel goodness at the end. The throw is decent, on my skin I’d say about 5 hours but I can still get whiffs of it on my clothing throughout the day.

My first venture into Arcana and I’m really pleased! The scents are nothing like I’ve ever smelled before and being able to capture “dusty honey” and “dab(s) of opium” are signs of a gifted perfumer. I don’t think my skin can do that “fresh cream” note, so I’m probably staying away from those. She uses the standard glass 5 ml bottles, and are priced on the higher end ($19-$20) through her eBay shop.

Her Valentine’s Day release just came out too, so may have to pick up a few of those! Can’t wait to try more.
